What Are The 9 Schools of the Bujinkan And Can You Give a Brief Description of Them?

The nine schools or ryu ha listed below comprise our Bujinkan training system. Three of these are ninjutsu schools, which specialize in espionage, information gathering, geography, battle tactics etc. rather than combative techniques. The other six ryu are more focused in the combative technique areas. Some schools contain a great number of weapons while others are more concerned with unarmed combat. Today our method of training is focused on the complete nature of combat rather than simply Ninjutsu. This is why our Soke Dr. Hatsumi refers to our art as Budo Taijutsu, or martial arts body magic.

Togakure Ryu Ninpo - Happo Hikenjutsu was founded in the late 1100's by Daisuke Nishina and is the second oldest ryu in the Bujinkan system. Noted for the various ninjutsu weapons as the shuko, ashuko shinodake, shuriken and the like.

Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu - Happo Hikenjutsu was founded in the mid 1100's by Tozawa Hakuunsai and is the oldest ryu in Dr. Hatsumi's Bujinkan system. This school is our most famous, as it contains the kihon happo, sanshin no kata, and muto taihenjutsu which are the foundation skills of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu.

Kukishinden Ryu Daken Taijutsu - This school was founded in the mid 1300's by Izumo Kanja Yoshitero & contains traditional battlefield weapons, ideas and skill groups.

Shinden Fudo Ryu Daken Taijutsu - Happo Hiken was founded in the beginning of 1100's by Izumo Kaja Yoshitero. This school of natural techniques and movements reflects the properties of nature and the elementals. Strict training concerned with wrestling Nature was one of the keys to mastering this school.

Gyokushin Ryu Ninpo was founded in the mid 1500's by Sasaki Goemon Teruyoshi. To date little of this school has been taught to the outside world.

Koto Ryu Koppojutsu - Happo Hikenjutsu was founded in the mid 1500's by Sakagami Taro Kunishige and is known for it's koppojutsu, and unusual "biken"
or hidden weapon style movements and fighting ideas.

begining of 1600's by Takagi Oriemon Shigenobu. This Bujinkan Ryu is noted as a "bodyguard school" having fast, effective Jujutsu techniques and daisho sabaki.
